Canadian Citizenship by Descent: Parent Born in Canada
If your mother or father was born in Canada, you are almost certainly a Canadian citizen by descent. This is the most straightforward path to citizenship.
Am I Eligible?
You likely qualify if:
- Your parent was born in Canada, OR
- Your parent became a naturalized Canadian citizen before you were born
- Your parent was a Canadian citizen at the time of your birth
This has been true since the 1977 Citizenship Act and was not changed by Bill C-3. The parent path has always allowed first-generation citizenship by descent.
Documents You Need
- Your parent's Canadian birth certificate — order from the province where they were born
- Your birth certificate — must show your parent's name
- Marriage certificate (if applicable) — if your parent changed their name
- Proof of Citizenship application (CIT 0001) — available from IRCC website
How to Apply
- Gather all required documents
- Complete the Proof of Citizenship application (CIT 0001)
- Pay the government fee (approximately CAD $75)
- Mail your application to the IRCC Case Processing Centre
- Wait for processing (approximately 6-12 months)
- Receive your Canadian Citizenship Certificate
Estimated Costs

What If I Don't Have Contact With My Canadian Parent?
Citizenship is a legal right, not dependent on your parent's cooperation. If you don't have contact with your Canadian parent:
- You can obtain their birth certificate directly from the Canadian province where they were born
- Your own birth certificate showing their name as a parent is sufficient proof of parentage
- An immigration lawyer can help navigate cases with absent parents
